Tánaiste Joan Burton TD has expressed delight that Dublin West was one of the constituencies with a YES vote of more than 70% in last week’s referendum on Marriage Equality.
Burton was at the City West count centre on Saturday morning along with a large group of Labour Party tally workers.
By 9.20 am it was evident that YES was going to win by a huge majority. Some districts had a 3 to 1 majority for yes.
Equally important was the turnout of voters which reached a level usually seen at a general election.
“I am delighted with the result both locally and nationally. I want to pay tribute to the huge effort put in by Labour Party members who mounted a thorough door to door canvass in every part of the constituency.”
In addition, Labour was the only party to arrange a public meeting to discuss the issue early in the campaign.
Burton continued: “The count on Saturday was the culmination of an immensely emotional month for campaigners. In that time Ireland heard many personal stories of the hurt caused and the lives damaged over decades. The people of Dublin West responded generously to these stories and the size of the YES vote testifies to that generosity.
“Ireland has become a ‘rainbow nation’ of inclusion and diversity
“I was particularly delighted at the commitment shown by young voters to the cause. Many young people who had emigrated returned home to vote. I do hope they saw in this referendum a country that is now in a dramatic recovery and that they might now examine the possibility of a more permanent return to Ireland in the near future.
“Last week was a milestone in Ireland’s recovery. I am proud the Labour Party played such a leading role in putting the matter before the people and campaigning for such a landslide victory”.
